The TurnAround Team, Inc. Board Meeting – 10 March 2005

The meeting was called to order at 7 PM by Deb Swank, Chair. In attendance were; Deborah Swank, Chairman, Robert Banks, Don Taylor, Delores Smith, Betty Dunhaupt, Tom Madl, Karen Hiller, Gail Kenefake, Ann Adams and guest David Leamon.

  1. David Leamon walked everyone through the planning on the Aaron Douglas Celebration Mural. Groundbreaking is set for March 14th at 2:30 PM at the site. There will be a mural blowup and site map. It will be rain or shine. Post cards are mailed out to donors for an invitation. Topeka High students will be there as well. David and Deb went through the general plan of how the program will flow. The tentative dedication date is May 23rd. At the Board meeting on April 14th we will discuss the dedication date. (As you read this, the wall is going up!) So far, $39,783 in cash has been raised and there is a pledge from Capitol Federal for $5,000. WUSGA is working on a deal to add significantly more funds. The mural project itself rounds off to about $49,000 plus there will about $5,000 needed for story boards around the site.

Topeka High School will be doing a Kevin Wilmont play April 21st to April 23rd.

  2. The College Hill Business District spring clean up is set for April 23rd. (As you read this, the date has been moved up to April 16th.) We need to coordinate with both WU and HND and come up with ideas for what to do. Don, Delores, Deb, and Haley will work on coordination.
  3. There was a brief report on the College Hill Business District meeting held February 16th. WU really supports the project. Development to go over the proposals for how CDBG monies will be targeted to a portion of TTNIA this year.
  4. There is a meeting at the City on March 14th at 10 AM to go over and select the contractor(s) and alternates for the Washburn-Lane Parkway Lighting Project Phase III. It should last about 1 hour.
  5. People need to get nominations to Rob and Deb for recognitions in April. Two addresses offered were 919 S Kansas and Huntoon & Oakley.
  6. A discussion was held about whether or not we want to have a candidate’s forum at the March General meeting. It would displace the regular program that is already scheduled. There is a forum scheduled at WU on March 30th so it was decided to leave our program as is.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 PM.

People who are interested in improving the quality and image of Central Topeka, particularly people who live in or own property in the Central Topeka area from Monroe to MacVicar and 21st to the Kansas River, are particularly encouraged to attend. For further information, call 234-2883.
