TurnAround Team, Inc Board Meeting – June 9, 2005
In attendance: Deborah Swank; Rob Banks; Betty Dunhaupt; Karen Hiller; Don Rice; Gail Kenefake; Don Taylor; Desiree Lyons; Jim Turner; Tom Ellis; and Frank Hoge. David Leamon also attended.
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Deborah Swank at 7 PM.
Don Taylor and Jim Turner will coordinate to get the Annual Report submitted to the Secretary of State. They will work on the IRS-990 filing as well.
A donation check from Cox Communication is still pending… the check is cut.
We discussed the possibility of applying for a Kansas Humanities Council grant to work on the back side of the mural. Such persons as: Gwendolyn Brooks; Aaron Douglas; Langston Hughes; Oscar Micheau; Gordon Parks; and Paul Robeson. It could be a mural of black artists in Kansas and there could be an education component to it as well. David Loenstein could supervise students painting it. Rob Banks will look into the filing requirements. Motion to apply for grants was approved.
We discussed the Washburn-Lane Parkway Lighting project. Work starts June 20 on the next phase starting at 21st Street. The project will take not more than 120 days. Don and Deb will work on getting flyers distributed to the houses along the route. The grant for Phase IV was not approved… Don will contact KDOT to get information on why.
We discussed the current status of the Aaron Douglas Mural Project. Dedication was a great success. The TAT needs to send out ‘thank you’ to the major donors. The contribution list can be put on the narrative panels. We discussed the issue of getting a water line put in to facilitate watering. Preliminary costs look like $3,000. Motion to spend up to $3,300 for the water line was approved. We discussed the idea of a photo of the mural to sell to continue fundraising. The rights from the NYC Public Library to do it might be a challenge. It may take as much as $5,000 to do all of the video editing, but $500 should get all of the front-end basic annotation of all of the footage. Bill Riaphan has volunteered to help with a sign for the park. “Aaron Douglas Art Park A Project of The TurnAround Team, Inc” was generally agreed upon.
Deb, Tom, and Don met with WSGA people to discuss the August 20th cleanup. We discussed what kind of projects should be done this year. Comment was made on the City and Correctional Facility inmates working on the Tennessee Town area already. Don and Deb will survey the sidewalks and get started on spraying. There will be a discussion at the June 27th General Meeting of projects.
Next Board meeting is on July 14th.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30 PM.
