The TurnAround Team, Inc. Board Meeting 8 May 2008
|
In Attendance: Delores Smith, Roy O’Neil, Don Rice, Alex Kovalchuk, Karen Hiller
The meeting convened at 7:10 PM at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library
May Meeting - The May General Membership meeting will be May 19, co-
sponsored with the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library, and will be a
housing preservation program titled On The Street Where You Live.
Code - Delores reported that she has been actively working on Code issues in
her neighborhood and a little in Tennessee Town. Code staff has been
cooperative.
Emergency Repairs, Updates Delores reported that the City is still doing
plumbing, sewer and furnace repairs. They are no longer doing roofs or
guttering.
April General Membership Meeting - There were only 4 people in attendance –
Duane Pomeroy, Don Taylor, Don Rice and Karen Hiller. Recognitions had not
been prepared, and there was no advance publicity for the meeting done. Karen
and Don reported that, with Duane’s leadership, they spent the meeting time
discussing setting priorities of meeting planning, reviewing and refreshing
strategic planning and membership redevelopment. Duane had expected to
initiate discussions about those directions at this board meeting, but was
unable to attend because his tennis team went to a tournament. Board
members should expect these items to be on the June Board agenda.
Those present discussed that we must
Get announcement out about the meetings, as agreed at the first of the year
Get the names from sign-in sheets onto our list-serve and e-mail lists – catch up
those that have added and do it promptly from now on
Update our membership/mailing lists
Aaron Douglas Art Fair - Karen handed out artist recruitment packets. For food
booths, Historic Old Town, College Hill and Tennessee Town are committed.
Roy will ask Chesney Park if they would like to be a food vendor also. Don
moved, and Alex seconded that the TurnAround Team itself be the pop and
water vendor, per a suggestion from Delores. All present agreed by acclamation
that this was a good idea and should be recommended for a TAT Board vote at
the June meeting where more members are present.
Karen also shared that the Art Fair team is in need of an event manager, a
fundraiser/budget manager, and PR people to do TV, radio and print media. Her
preference is to recruit from Central Topeka rather than citywide. Delores
suggested one name. There was some discussion that the PR recruiting could
be for the TAT, including the art fair, rather than just the art fair. Karen will
work on it.
Board member from TSCPL - Delores will follow up with Rob Banks to see if we
can get our TSCPL Board position filled this month.
Finances - Don handed out financial statements and they were reviewed.
Don also reported that we have CD’s renewing on May 12 and June 9 for which
he needs direction. Discussion centered on rates being low, rates often going
up around election times and the fact that we should not need the money for a
year. Consensus was to direct Don to go for 6 month renewals on both, asking
Commerce to match the best rates in town and give the TAT any promotional rate
they are offering others.
There was discussion that the TAT could possibly get grants for activities from
sources such as Lowes ($5-25,000), Home Depot ($3,000), 2 sources that funded
the Great Wall, and Target.
It was asked whether the annual tax report and corporate renewal have gone in.
Don will check and make sure the papers are all filed.
Website Alex shared the updates he has done so far on the TAT website.
that you just have to call them to get on. There was interest from some in doing
that.
that.
Great Wall - Roy reported that 2 sections will be done in 2008 – a Chesney Park
and a Central Park section. Each section will be as big as the two last year.
Meeting adjourned: 8:30 PM
