“Garlinghouse Homes – One of Our Own” was the program. L.F. Garlinghouse
started it in 1907 as a real estate company at the southeast corner of 6th &
Jackson. Which came first, the house or the house plans? The first LFG
book “Bungalow Homes” was published in 1916. In the early 1800s A.J.
Downing published “The Architecture of Country Houses” which is still a
useful reference. Low, one storey houses appear to have started in India in
the 1890s – 1900s for very practical reasons. The word for that style of
house became Englishized into bungalow. The “airplane” bungalow might
have gotten its name from a particular curved roof style reminiscent of the
wing edge. A presentation of a whole series of styles over the years of houses
from the Garlinghouse homes books and the actual houses built here in
Topeka.
